Happening Now: The Learning Center's Discussion About Music Genres

I understand that people naturally have different tastes and opinions. What I don't understand is how people (who claim to be open-minded) close themselves off completely to entire genres of music. Especially people who are "musicians" or say they are "musically savvy" say things like, "I don't like Corporate Rock." It seems that these people say these things because they are trying to differ from the mainstream. A classic phrase that I hear a lot is, "I like everything but Country." Grrr... Pet peeve!

I always express that I judge music on a song-by-song basis. I try not to judge a song by its genre. Obviously I have styles of music that I tend to like more than others, but I try to give each song a chance. I think over-generalizations are annoying--even when it comes to music!!!

LOL--how did you just coax me into admitting on a public blog that I liked "See You Again" by, gulp, Miley Cyrus, when it first came out?!?!

I didn't discover what I consider to be "good" music until I started downloading it a couple years ago. Until then, I felt so restrained because I had to listen to what the radio told me to. After I found an online music community, I started learning about thousands of bands that I would have never had the chance to hear.

It's not that I don't like all mainstream music; there are many that creep into my listening library. However, I choose to listen to independent music for philosophical reasons as well. I do not agree with artists who sell themselves out to record companies that are only going to pocket obscene amounts of their hard-earned money, just to end up placating the artists' fans with stupid things like DRM-protected CDs that you can't even rip to your own home computer. There are many talented artists out there who are working double-time to record, produce and distribute their own music. THAT'S what I appreciate.
